Last week I decided to do what Julia Cameron, author of the inspiring creativity manual 'The Artist's Way' calls fill the well. Creatively if you are just giving out and never putting anything back in, after a certain amount of time the well dries up. The same can be said to be true of the spiritual life, although the methods for filling the well are slightly different. The important thing with creative replenishment is to listen to what your heart of hearts really wants to do. Cameron describes this as an artists date with yourself, where you take yourself out and treat yourself. I suppose with spiritual replenishment the trick is to spend lots of time in prayer. Both involve a rest or maybe a retreat from the daily grind. Anyway, in this creative replenishment mission I declared cultural week and set aside a whole week of holidays to go and visit all the art exhbitions, films, music, theatre, ballet and other cultural events that I wanted to. This being London of course I only managed to do about half of everything that was on my list, but it was the most amazing experience. Now I feel that my imagination is once more fertile. I can't think why it didn't occur to me before to spend a holiday in my home town - just as inspiring as going abroad and far less expensive. Not to mention the virtuous eco glow of not having flown.
